You know, it's interesting...how people think that just because you have lots of "nice stuff" you are rich! Or at least you're not struggling financially....right? And let me tell you...it's EVEN more interesting when you are a pastor couple (like us). It's almost funny sometimes when (some) people walk into our house - you can just READ the look on their face. They think "Wow. Look at all their nice stuff. They must get paid REALLY well at the church!" And usually, you kind of sense a bit of disgruntlement along with that thought...kind of like "I don't even get paid that much" or something like that. Like I said...makes for some interesting dynamics! ) Of course not everyone is like this (yay!) but there are a few. SO, you try to throw in bits and pieces here and there so that they don't just fill in all the blanks themselves. Like...most of the stuff we've gotten has been for free from VERY VERY generous people. Like our piano...ummm...if we would have bought that, it would have taken a HUGE chunk out of our bank account...however, we got it from Jonathan's parents. And our TV - someone from the church gave it to us. And almost all the clothing and toys for Tate have been given to us by church families, or our own families. Annnnd, the list could go on and on and on! Of course we have bought some things ourselves - like the leather couch and chair (but even they have 'scars' on the backs of them so we got them for a discount)...and yes, we have a van. And yes, we saved a looooong time in order to be able to buy that van. :) So...things aren't always how they seem...
Recently I've noticed more of these 'looks' too...why? Because since I started doing reviews on products (like baby carriers, maternity tee's, cute shirts/clothing/shoes for Tate, etc.) people think we are buying it all. And really...basically no one knows anything about "reviews" here, so they have every right to assume we bought it...after all, we didn't steal it! haha. :) Everyone notices too when we have something new. It's kind of funny actually. :) I mean, other people could buy a hundred new things and one or two of them might get noticed...we get one new thing and everyone notices. ;) Sooo, I think I'll have to start replying to their comments that all these new items they see actually were FREE! Because I think we are starting to get a few too many "looks"...of "where do they get the money to get all this nice stuff?!" Yep...that's what we'll do I guess. :) Because we don't want to give the wrong impression, and we would NEVER have the money (or if we did have the money, we probably wouldn't use it that way anyways!) to be buying cute little t-shirts off the internet or new and fun baby carriers, etc.
So, how's that for a post? My point? We've been blessed to get SO much stuff given to us...and although some people may think we are, we're not rakin' in the dough. :)
P.S. Don't forget to enter my contest this week! Tomorrow's the last day!

I LOVE when people pass things on to us!! It really helps....
Love you Blog!!
dont u just love life under a microscope? at least u have a good attitude about it :)
If people really knew you guys, they would know how careful you are with money! Hope you had a great weekend!
I know exactly how you feel. Alot of our stuff is hand me downs are really great stuff I find at garage sales! And since I am a SAHM that makes it worse!!
I am so with you. My husband and I have some nice stuff- a t.v. a camera etc- but it is all from my parents. They are very giving to us. I wish people would reserve judgement. I am right there with you getttiong free stuff for reviews. I will def. tell people I did not purchase these items.
It is such a blessing to have friends and family who can help out - we also have several very nice things, including a ton of baby stuff that were hand me downs, or given to us from family. I do feel like we have a lot of nice things, and it is a good feeling, but it definitely does not mean we have much money!
We are not all rich in the same way, but if being loving and caring was considered rich, I would have to say I have not met anyone wealthier that you and your husband.
Even if you did actually buy those things, I think people forget about the art of budgeting! That much can be done on a small salary if you are careful. And that you very well could have bought the item, but have been saving for it, or it was within your budget. Funny how people assume. But I agree, free and cheap stuff is awesome!
It annoys me to no end when people count my money for me. I'm eminently capable of counting it on my own, thank you very much.
Of course, some people like to run it up the flagpole, and they can be just as annoying. Like the sales types I used to work with, who never missed an opportunity to post pictures of the car they were buying, or whatever chatchkeh they were about to bring home.
Curiously, they were always really quiet when said vehicle was repossessed a few months later.
Which is my way of saying this world's too materialistic, and I'm glad you set the record straight here. Good on ya.
(And, yes, the Canuck in me LOVES that pic of our funny Canadian money!)
I don't think you should feel you need to justify yourself to anyone....you know you are not doing anything wrong. But sadly, the reality is that because of hubby's job, you are in the spotlight a bit...more noticed. And the review stuff...well, you are working to get that stuff....you get it for free, but in exchange for your review (which is work!).
Sorry you have been made to feel this way!
Luckily, we aren't judged by any earthly being!
A friend of mine said something similar about a woman we know who supports herself through her music ministry. I told her the handbag she was eyeing was probably a gift from someone.
