I've known about this for a while now, but recently it was on the news again...that certain sippy cups and bottles contain a dangerous chemical called Bisphenol-A, (basically it's a substance used in the production of plastics that has been shown to cause TONS of health problems in animal tests). So, although I knew about it when I bought Tate his sippy cups, I didn't know a bunch about it. So finally I did a little bit of research on it, and you can get SAFE, BPA free sippy cups (and bottles too...but we are at the sippy cup stage now) online. Some stores might carry them too...but not the ones we have around here! Anyway, I decided it was time to try out some of these safer sippy cups for our precious son - because we most definitely do not want him having side effects now or later on in life from getting Bisphenol-A in his system. I don't think any parent would want that! It's actually kind of frustrating that so many companies make sippy cups and bottles that are NOT BPA free! You'd think they would want to make sure that our children are not going to be harmed from using their products too. Well, I will definitely be buying BPA free products whenever I can now. We recently got a Born Free Training Cup to try out. I found the Born Free Cups at Green Nest - they've got TONS of other great products too that would be great for making sure you home is a healthy and safe place!
Tate seemed to really like the new Born Free sippy cup though! I think he might do a little better with the drinking cup instead of the trainer cup though. The flow from the trainer cup is pretty slow - which he didn't seem to mind...it just took forever for him to drink his milk! :) But there's a couple things I like about these sippy cups besides the fact that they are BPA free...the don't leak or spill (and any mommy knows that is a must!! These sippy cups are forever ending up on their side or upside down...or else Tate is trying to dump milk into one of his pots that he is "cooking" in!), so non-leaking is verrrry good. They also have a really different kind of air vent system that they use which minimizes the vacuum and creates a freer flow of liquid. I didn't know this before, but apparently when there is a lot of negative pressure that develops in the cup, it causes your child to suck harder, and makes it that much harder for them to actually drink. AND it also increases the risk of ear infections! Yikes! So, these Born Free Trainer/Drinking cups seem like a great way to try to eliminate that problem. So there you have it! Tate's first try with a SAFE sippy cup. :) Oh, and I just have to mention one more thing - they really arn't any more expensive than the non-safe ones that you can buy at your local grocery store, or at Wal.mart...so why not go the safe route? I think I would have done this in the first place if I knew the cost was so close to being the same!

The Nuby colored sippy cups from Wal-Mart are safe too, just in case you're looking for something else. An awesome resource for all things safe for babies is the Soft Landing Baby Blog. They also sell a ton of safe stuff in their store.
funny u should post this. yesterday i decided to take away taites bottle. i had caleb off his at 10 mo. but he easily transitioned.. not taite. hes been very hard.
hes using a gerber sippy. i dont think their unsafe... but im not opposed to using other kinds. :-) im a sippy cup collector HAHA
Anything with colored plastic is generally safe. It's the clear hard plastic that is dangerous.
Yay, these cups are super great lookin'!!! I've wondered about my sippy's for a while, but I'm pretty sure they are safe..but I just may have to get a few of these ones for our collection! I think its time to move up from the first stage cup anyways for us!
Hi, I am new to your site. Kellan sent me over :)
It is really nice to find other mom's with the same ideas.
We have a born free. My daughter likes them but since it isn't spill proof she will empty the whole thing because she thinks it's funny. So, we had to put it up. We found a playtex insulator labeled a 5 and have been using those and Thermos foogo(it has a straw).
You might already know this site but they did reviews on safe sippy and baby bottles.
